Affogato al Caffè

Ingredients

• 8 scoops (approximately 500g) high-quality vanilla gelato or fior di latte gelato
• 4 shots (approximately 120ml total) freshly brewed hot espresso
• 4 teaspoons granulated sugar (optional, for sweetening espresso)
• 4 amaretti cookies, for serving (optional)
• 2 tablespoons dark chocolate shavings, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Brew 4 separate single shots of espresso using an espresso machine or stovetop moka pot, ensuring each shot is fresh and hot. If desired, stir 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar into each shot to taste.
2. Place 4 individual serving glasses or small deep bowls in the freezer for 2 minutes to chill them, which will help keep the gelato firm longer.
3. Remove the chilled glasses from the freezer and immediately place 2 generous scoops of vanilla gelato into each glass.
4. Pour one hot shot of espresso slowly and directly over the gelato in each glass, allowing the hot espresso to melt slightly around the edges of the gelato.
5. Optionally, garnish each serving with a sprinkle of dark chocolate shavings and place one or two amaretti cookies on the side of the glass.
6. Serve immediately while the contrast between the hot espresso and cold gelato is at its best, providing spoons so guests can enjoy both the liquid and the partially melted gelato together.
