The Daiquiri Clásico originated in the late 19th century in Daiquiri, a mining town near Santiago de Cuba, where American engineer Jennings Cox first combined local white rum with lime juice and sugar. This refreshing, perfectly balanced cocktail became a Havana staple, famously popularized at El Floridita bar where Ernest Hemingway was a devoted regular.
Jump to recipePrepare simple syrup if not already made by combining equal parts white sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar fully dissolves, then remove from heat and allow to cool completely to room temperature.
Chill four coupe or martini glasses by filling them with ice water and letting them sit for at least 2 minutes while you prepare the cocktail.
Fill a cocktail shaker with approximately 1 cup of ice cubes to ensure the drinks are properly chilled and slightly diluted.
Measure and add 2 oz of Cuban white rum, 0.75 oz of freshly squeezed lime juice, and 0.5 oz of simple syrup into the shaker for each serving; work in two batches of two servings each if your shaker is small.
Seal the cocktail shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels very cold and frost forms on the exterior.
Discard the ice water from the chilled glasses and strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into each coupe glass to achieve a smooth, frothy texture without ice shards.
Taste before serving and adjust balance if needed by adding a few drops more lime juice for tartness or a small splash more simple syrup for sweetness.
Garnish each glass with a fresh lime wheel placed on the rim or a lime wedge on the side, and serve immediately while cold.
For a non-alcoholic variation, replace the rum with 2 oz of fresh limeade or sparkling lime water per serving, increase simple syrup slightly to 0.75 oz, and follow the same shaking and straining process for a refreshing virgin Daiquiri Clásico.
Note on alcohol content: each serving contains approximately 2 oz of rum at 40% ABV, which constitutes one standard drink; consume responsibly and do not exceed recommended guidelines.
